Now let’s look at the Google SEO ranking factors best for blogs in Nigeria.

10 Most Important Google Ranking Factors For Blogs in Nigeria

1. Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD)

From my long research, I discovered that domain extensions such as “.ng” “.com.ng” “.org.ng” are given far more privilege to rank better in Nigeria. When using the ccTLD the search engine already known your target audience.

To take full advantage of the ccTLD as a search engine ranking factor you may also buy the .com extension of the same domain name and redirect it to the ccTLD.

The only problem with this country code Top-Level Domain is that it limits your site ability to rank high globally.

If your blog domain extention is not a country code top-level domain, then you must consider using the Google console international targeting feature to tell the search engine who your target audience are. But the later can never be as effective  as the ccTDL.

2. Keyword as First Word in a Domain

Domain names that start with a target keyword has an edge over other sites that do not have such keyword in their domain name.

In this situaion, if that keyword or related keyword is searched for a higher privilege is given the domain name with that keyword.

For instance, You can Google “make money online” you will definitely find “makemoneyonline.com.ng” in the Google SERP. This does not mean that the site has the best information on how to make money online, but you are actually for both the keyword and domain name.

This is one of the best way one optimize his/her to get more reputation on the search engine.

3. Quality Contents and Contents Updates

To detect quality contents, Google uses Visitor Activities, Engaged Traffic and Visitor frequency.

Google analytics actually calculate values such as;  Entrances, Bounce rate and Exit rate which can be used indicates how many of those people are finding your content very useful.

When a contents is great, visitors may return and read it again, in this regard Google may be having a record of “Returning IP”, they know when you revisit a webpage.

Most time it just have to take some time before a website webpages can start ranking very high in Google, especially here in Nigeria where lots of mushroom blogs exist.

Recent studies has shown that site that is existing for a period of 3 years without any SEO has more search engine reputation than site existing for 1 years with average SEO being performed on it – all things being equal.

Sometimes its not about the SEO you did but how long your contents has existed on the web.

5. Sites with HTTPS (HTTPS as a ranking signal)

Google made it clear in 2014 that site with https will have better search privilege over site with just http read it here.

For most bloggers, especially those new in the game, one of the best way to improve their SEO is to simply migrate their blog from http to https. This has proven to be positive just as said by Google.

It is very easy to migrate. Just install an SSL Certificate on your server and enable HTTPS.

Https as a Google ranking factor in Nigeria do not only just give your website a better search reputation, it also keep your site content and users info more secured, by making it difficult for hackers to gain access on.

6. Backlinks from Authoritative URLs

Backlinks remain a very important ranking factor in Google over the years.

But Google has learned to take off the bad links from the good ones. The best backlinks are the one coming from authoritative URLs (domains).

When a webpage earns a lots of high quality backlinks, Google sees the content on that webpage to be very useful and therefore ranks the content or atricle higher. This also will have a positive global effect on the entire website.

7. Time Visitors Spends on Each Webpage

Google have the track of IP address that visits your blog/website, and how long they spend on your webpages especially when they are coming via google search.

The more time a visitor spends on each  post the better Google will see the relavance of that post. This is the reason some people try to post very long articles on their blogs.

Base on the content length, Google knows the average estimated time to be spent, just as it shows it in Analytics.

Therefore, a long content is boring visitors will quickly exist or navigate to another webpage.

Because a visitor did not spend up to the average time on a webpage it will be a vote down. The large effect of this will reduce the average time spent on that webpage and therefore reduce the webpage ranking.

This Google ranking factor only affects individual webpage and may not have a general effect on the whole site or blog.

8. Website Loading Speed

Search engines give more preference to websites that loads pretty much faster. I can not really explain why this is so, but make sure you website loads very fast.

The average loading time of a websites should not be more 4 seconds. If you site takes far more than this amount, then you will have to find a way to resolve it to rank better here in Nigeria.

If site loads slow, visitors may not have the patience to wait or will refuse to navigate to other pages.  The result of this will be an increase in bounce rate.

9. Mobile Friendly Webpages

If a website or webpages are not optimized responsively for mobile phones, they will not rank well mobile search.

Knowing that most internet users in today’s world visits the internet with their mobile phones, not having a mobile responsive will be a very big mistake on your side.

It’s good today that most websites and blog are built with frameworks such as WordPress. WordPress itself is mobile responsive and most of its themes are also responsive on default, else you decide to choose otherwise.

10. Site Up-Time

If you host your site on a server that is always down, then the search engine will look less on your site. When hosting a site always make sure you choose a good hosting company. Choose a host that guarantee up to 99.9% server up-time period. Although this depends on how long your site often goes down. The shorter the better.
